2026 Trail Master LITE Course
Description
Overview
This is a 2-day (LITE) version of Trail Design Specialists’ Trail Master Certification Class (typically 4 days). This workshop will touch on the latest advances in trail design, construction and maintenance with a focus on long-term sustainability and ease of maintenance.
Topics will include how to properly design and lay out a trail, how to avoid erosion and other environmental issues, how to handle user conflicts, proper, modern construction techniques for sustainability, how to close and rehabilitate existing trails, and a host of other topics. The course will include both classroom learning and hands-on practical trail experience.
Day 1: 8:00a –4pm
The day starts in the classroom and introduces the training session(s). The program will then move into a power point presentation about basic design to make sure everyone has an understanding of how to plan for the creation of sustainable trails. The the rest of the day will focus on proper trail construction and maintenance techniques. Plenty of time will be figured in for Q and A.
Lunch is provided by host.
Day 2: 9:00a -2pm
Gather at designated meeting spot and finish/recap techniques from the day before. After conducting a safety talk, the group will proceed to the work site and perform hands on trail work/training. This work may include; full bench trail construction, trail re-construction, berm removal, rolling grade dip, existing structure re-construction or proper removal of encroaching brush on an existing trail. The day will conclude back at the meeting spot with a short wrap up talk. Questions will be encouraged throughout the day.

What to bring:
- A willingness to learn new concepts in trail design
- Pen and paper
- Good work boots or shoes
- Work gloves, enough water for a full day of trail work and safety glasses
- Since we will be outside on day 2, please dress accordingly.
